1. Pedro De Lousada was born before 1525.1 User ID: 1793.
General Notes: [Barrow-lousada.org] Extract
All of the known Barrows and Lousadas are contained within the Descendants of Pedro de Lousada genealogy. Pedro de Lousada is known from Portuguese Inquisition records as the father of Amador de Lousada who was born about 1540 and who in 1590 was married to Ana Mendes. Perhaps Pedro and his wife Briatis Alvares came as children to Portugal from Spain in late 1492 or early 1493. We may never know.
Pedro married Briatis Alvares. Briatis was born before 1525.1
The child from this marriage was:
+ 2 M i. Amador De Lousada 2 was born about 1540 and died in Livorno, Italy.
2. Amador De Lousada 2 (Pedro De1) was born about 1540 and died in Livorno, Italy. User ID: 1581.
Amador married Geronima Mendes in 1561-1574. Geronima was born before 1559.3
Children from this marriage were:

+ 8 M ii. Isaac Baruch Louzada was born about 1585 in Vinhais,6 died before 1 Jul 1667 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and was buried on 1 Jul 1667 in Beth Haim, Amsterdam, Netherlands.7

+ 15 F ii. Maria Lousada was born in 1623.
6. Daniel Baruch Louzada (Amador De2, Pedro De1) was born about 1580 in Portugal and died in Livorno, Italy. User ID: 1583.
General Notes: ref 108 www.barrow-lousada.org refers to a widow of Daniel
as he seems to have been the first of the Livorno brothers to die we equate him with Antonio born about 1580
7. David Baruh Louzada (Amador De2, Pedro De1) was born about 1584 in Portugal5 and died before 1640 in ?Madrid. User ID: 1584.
General Notes: this person is quite unknown but is suggested as a father of Moses the elder of Curacao who appeared in Surinam around 1671 and who father a son David there in 1674 - see Curacao discussion on www.barrow-lousada.org
David was the likely father of Aaron #376 as this was the name of Aaron's first-born son
we equate him with Diogo
David married Luna Levi Lousada. Luna died on 21 Dec 1686 in Amsterdam, Netherlands and was buried on 27 Dec 1686 in Beth Haim, Amsterdam, Netherlands.10
8. Isaac Baruch Louzada (Amador De2, Pedro De1) was born about 1585 in Vinhais,6 died before 1 Jul 1667 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and was buried on 1 Jul 1667 in Beth Haim, Amsterdam, Netherlands.7 User ID: 42.
General Notes: We do not know which of the sons of Amador de Lousada became known as Isaac. Perhaps is was Francisco born around 1585 which is the date we show.
The first-born son of Aaron #376 was named David and not Isaac which was the name given to the 2nd son who was born on 23 Tisri 5440 but died on his 7th day! This presumably means that the natural father of Aaron was David an earlier husband of Luna. Of him we cannot say much - other than that the 2 husbands may have been brothers. In this case, the hypothetical earlier David may have been the grandfather of the first David of Surinam! That is Luna had a son Moses with David as well as a son Aaron.
Note that the first son of David #44 was named Isaac in accordance with the normal rule but David was younger that Aaron and therefore Isaac #42 was the natural father.
Isaac's wife and a daughter were both named Luna - meaning that the name of a grandmother was Luna also. Gracia was probably an earlier daughter than Luna, but perhaps the natural paternal grandmother was named Ana so perhaps an even earlier daughter died.
Isaac married Luna Levi Lousada. Luna died on 21 Dec 1686 in Amsterdam, Netherlands and was buried on 27 Dec 1686 in Beth Haim, Amsterdam, Netherlands.10
Children from this marriage were:

Birth Notes: As for the year of birth, a gravestone transcription error must have occurred with (at least) one numeral and it is anybody's guess as to what the original number was. Mine is that - having seen the reverse error on another occasion (in fact with the eroded grave of Isaac Lamego there was an error in reading 2 numerals and there 82 was read as 57) - 7 was read as 2. That is I guess age of death was 75 and he was born in 1620. Death Notes: In the light of Wilfred Samuel (ref 5) we can see that age of death of 25 in 1695 does not sit well with the birth of his first son David in 1677, and even more alarming for people of my vintage is that Shilstone calculates date of death as 10 Oct 1695, while Samuel reports 3 Oct 1695 as the date his will was proved! General Notes: First-born son was David so father probably not Isaac #42 and perhaps his older brother. That is he was a stepson but still a (half-)sibling of the children of Isaac #42 - he describes Moses David and Abraham as brothers. Noted events in his life were:
1. Residence: 1680, Broad Street, Barbados, West Indies. 39
2. Will: 9 May 1693, Barbados, West Indies. 40

was he Duarte a known brother of Abraham (Ton Tielen 14 Nov 2014)?
as noted by Ton Tielen on 5 Sep 2017 on his Sephardic Diaspora Facebook page 'What do we know about Isaac Israel Pereira? For one, he was the brother of Abraham Israel Pereira (1615-1674), merchant, kabbalist, author, founder of two yeshivas's in Erets Israel. Abraham and Isaac were both born in Madrid, came to Amsterdam circa 1645 and formed a business partnership. They signed notarial deeds as Abraham y Ysaac Pereira. Isaac died in 1654. His widow remarried with Baron Francisco Lopes Suasso.'
this reference http://www.dutchjewry.org/P.I.G./image/01102101.jpg shows the Suasso marriage and gives the wife as widow of Isaac Israel Pereira but gives her name as Rachel or Violanta de Pinto. This suggests that Isaac did not marry a Rodrigues Gomez (his brother Abraham married a Rodrigues Gomez in Madrid in 1628) but rather that Abraham married again to a de Pinto. Ref 217 suggests Isaac and Abraham Israel Pereira married sisters. These sisters therefore were de Pintos; and this inference is supported by Abraham's daughter the twice widowed Rachel marrying Jacob de Pinto

had a cousin Andre Goncalves also a shoemaker, born in Braganza
admitted to having Goncalo (probably Rodrigues) in her house around 1650 brother of Isabek Rodrigues the wife of Antonio Dias also a shoemaker born in Braganza
The latter error arises from the erroneous conversion of the gravestone date of 17 Tisri 5456. For using the hebcal date converter we arrive at 26 Sep 1695, but the Gregorian Calendar date thereby arrived at must be reduced by 10 days to get the relevant Julian Calendar date namely 16 Sep 1695. The Julian Calendar was kept in England until 1752. So Aaron died before his will was proven after all!
Will was written 9 May 1693 and proved 3 Oct 1695. The death date given in Shilstone ref 61 has Aaron dying 10 Oct 1695, and gives his age as 25 years, each of which seems to be an obvious mistake. The death date must lie between the will writing date and the proving date. It was almost certainly in late 1695 given his brother David received a pass on 17 Apr 1696 (ref 182) to visit Barbados. Applying the hebcal converter to 17 Tisri 5456 the gravestone date gives 26 Sep 1695 but Gregorian dates are 10 days bigger than Julian dates so the Julian date of death would be 16 Sep 1695. The origin of the age at death is unnknown - ref 61 does not give the Portuguese text for this. A common gravestone transcription error is to read a 7 as a 2; so perhaps age at death was 75.
Endenized 20 Aug 1675 (ref Wilfred Samuel). Edgar Samuel suggests he went to Barbados in 1659, since in his will he mentioned 26 years of slavery in connection with the 1685 family accounts which he did not sign.
This was the Aaron Baruh Lousada of whom it was said (quoted by Wilfred Samuel) 'His grandson and namesake was also a Barbados Jew, and from him (so Sir Thos. Colyer-Fergusson, the genealogist, states) are descended all the English Louzadas, including that Isaac Louzada in whose favour the Spanish dukedom "de Losada y Lousada" was revived in 1848.' There is a problem with this suggestion insofar as it relates to the first grandson Aaron #714. Aaron of Jamaica #125 and Jacob Baruh Lousada share the ancestry of the English Lousadas and these two are Jamaican. See www.barrow-lousada.org for discussion on this. Aaron #125 is a son of Emanuel #41 and he was the grandson who was the ancestor of the Lousada Dukes.

Of his brothers, two, David and Abraham, were intimately associated with Barbados, whilst one, Anthony Louzada (otherwise Moses Barrow), had just been appointed (1679) a broker of the City of London, where he was to attain great prominence, and to spend forty years of his life. He had settled in London towards the close of the Common-wealth.
Aaron Baruch Louzada and Rachel, sister of Isaac Gomez Henriques, of Barbados, were married to one another rather late in
life. When the husband died in 1693 his widow, who survived him by thirteen years, was left with four boys and two girls, all of them under age. Aaron Baruch Louzada seems to have carried on the tradition of service to the interests of the Jewish community created by his brother David Baruch Louzada, who had transferred himself to England shortly before the year with which this narrative deals.
David had become a British citizen on the 18th April, 1664. In October, 1669, he had taken part in the agitation by the Barbados Jews as to the admissibility of their evidence. Some time after his brother Aaron's death he returned from London to the Island, this time accompanied by his son. Aaron's nephew, Jacob Baruch Louzada, lived at Speightstown with his spouse Rebecca, and before another ten years had elapsed the grief was to be theirs of having to bring their two small sons, Isaac and Eliahu, down to the Bridgetown burial ground. Aaron Baruch Louzada took out letters of denization in 1676, four years later than his brother Abraham. As has been seen, he lived with his family in Broad Street, Bridgetown, attended by five slaves. He kept a saddle horse, but, when summoned to parade mounted on the 6th January, 1680, with Lt. Maxwell's Troop he failed to put in an appearance and his name duly figured on "A list of ye defaulters of ye same Troops on yt day." On the 9th August, 1681, Aaron Baruch Louzada headed a petition to the Council of Barbados on behalf of the Jews of the Island, whose rights to trade and to use the Courts had again
been called into question and as an outcome the favourable order of 1675 was re-enforced.
The other two assessors (with Abraham Abudiente) of the 1680 Jews' Levy were ISAAC GOMEZ HENRIQUES and Abraham de Soza Mendes; the former, a brother-in-law of Aaron Baruch Louzada, was usually known as Isaac Gomez, and he, too, was one of the wealthy Barbados merchants who ultimately withdrew to London. His
brothers were probably those outstanding Jamaican planters, David and Abraham Gomes Henriques, who had been endenizened there in 1668. David died in 1673 owning over 3,000 acres in that Island.
Although Isaac Gomez Henriques had settled in London long before 1701, nevertheless, his wife, Benvenida (Grasia), was laid to rest in Barbados on the 31st August of that year.
From her will (included in Samuel) brother Isaac Gomez is to invest in London funds to provide a dowry for daughter (and last child) Hannah. Failing Isaac Gomez fulfilling this task Isaque Dias a nephew is to take charge of the money.
Date of birth and death (1703) from Jews of Caribbean PAF and Shilstone; Samuel however says she survived husband by 13 years; but even if he assumes Aaron dies 1693 as he did there is only an 10 year difference so there is an obvious mistake here.
Her will in Portuguese is dated 29 Oct 1703 (from Samuel) Ref 5 Page 81 reads:-

(Recorded in Barbados16/24.)
The birthdates of the children surviving infancy are from Samuel but from Aaron's will Jacob and Emanuel didn't survive long
According to Hyamson's 'The Sephardim of England' Jacob Baruh Lousada appeared in England in the 1660 with MBL1. From the work of Ton Teniel at the Notary Archive at Municipal Archive of Amsterdam we know him to have lived in Amsterdam until his death there in 1681. He was a brother of the London Moses Baruh Lousada.
He seems to have been junior to Moses who went to Amsterdam 1649-59; then to London with Jacob in 1660, and then Jacob went back to Amsterdam to be with his father in 1662.
From sale of a half-house to David Lousada in 1674, Jacob's brother, it is clear that Jacob has 3 adult daughters - one of whom - Rebecca - married 2 years later. It is plausible to make him the father of Rebecca who married in 1696 in London - to a son of David!! Perhaps he is also the father of the Moses Baruh Lousada endenized in 1694 and settled in Barbados.
He was not the James Baruh Lousada endenized in England on16 Dec 1687 and settled in Barbados - this person is perhaps #711.
A Jacob died 1712 in Barbados but #653 or #711?

This is one of the burials noted as not being recorded by Shilstone.
Speculates a possible son Moses Baruh Lousada (died 12 May 1744 bur Novo Cem) who married Judith Treves
Notes against Moses read:-
Hyamson records 2 sons of MBL1 as having settled in Barbados and Jamaica. However, it is unlikely that this Moses is one of the sons. Sons generally were not named after fathers - where possible they were named after grandparents. The Benjamin Barrow Lousada tree is probably wrong on the same count! In this case we don't know who the father was!
A Moses Baruh Louzada was endenized in England in 1694 (see Bockstruck) and settled in Barbados. But perhaps he was also the Moses Baruch who later lived in London (he was a Bank of England shareholder) after the death of MBL1 in 1699.
Locating this Moses here as son of Jacob is speculative.
death BMR6 841
and against Judith read
According to Richard Dirsztay - a correspondent of Peter Lousada
the Benjamin Barrow Lousada family tree (see www.barrow-lousada.org) shows a daughter Judith of a Moses Baruh Lousada; however it also shows another daughter Sarah who married Solomon son of David.
this Sarah is thought more likely to be the daughter of MBL1 - the 1695 Jewish household survey shows only Sarah and no Judith.
the Benjamin Barrow Lousada tree is not reliable and it is possible that Judith and Sarah were not sisters
a possible inference is that this Judith is Judith Treves referred to above
[Barrow-Lousada.org] shows another possible child Simha Baruh Lousada died 7 Sep 1737 Amsterdam [Her notes show - possible death from Akevoth]
death from http://www.dutchjewry.org/P.I.G./image/00264101.jpg
According to the 1695 household survey Abraham a merchant was recorded living in London in 1695 with Rebecca and children Luna and Aaron - Maurice Woolf. We distinguish him from his nephew Abraham whom we deduce from the BM 1681 circumcision records to be a son with Mordecai of Moses #46.
We take the 1698 marriages in BMR2 to refer to the unrelated family of the NY chocolate merchant Jacob and his father-in-law Abraham - they were not Baruh Lousadas.
We suggest that Abraham #45 was the eldest son - on the grounds that the first member of a New Christian family reentering Judaism was often given the name Abraham, and his first-born traditionally was Isaac. Here, Isaac's first-born perhaps was Abraham after the paternal grandfather.
In ref 182 can be found the date (17 Apr 1696) an English pass was issued to Abraham Baruch Lousada to travel to Amsterdam.
Ton Tielen on 25 Dec 2015 found a notarial record dated 11 Nov 1698 of Joan Hoekeback GAA Not. Arch. 5868/306 that Abraham Baruch Lousada was among a group of 'merchants in Amsterdam, declaring at the request of Mr. Raphael Abendaño a local merchant, they have known him for a long time. He acted in 1692 and in London in 1693 at Boston, Boston to Nevis and again in London. Later he went with merchandize to London to New York and back to London until he recently came here. He always made himself known as an honest and reliably merchant'. We feel that that the mentioned Abraham is Abraham 45 not Abraham 1352 because Abraham 45 is recorded in London in 1695 but Abraham 1352 is last known in London in 1681. That is we take the mentioned Abraham to be the cousin of Abraham Israel Pereira - ref 141 of www.barrow-lousada.org
Marriage date 4 June 1679 but lost source reference
from D Verdooner's Handleiding
He went from Barbados to England in 1679 and returned to Barbados 1696 after death of brother Aaron. He was accompanied by his son Jacob Baruh Lousada. Birth and marriage data from 'Jewish Marriages in Amsterdam 1598-1811' Stadtsarchief Amsterdam Vijzelstraat 32 - found by John Bury March 2012 in Amsterdam. The death entry on www.barrow-lousada.org shows 2 wives but he must have had an early Barbados wife also. According to D M Bueno de Mesquita of Beth Haim in Amsterdam in December 2011 David Louzada was Treasurer of Beth Haim in 1683 - this shows on the death entry.
From Ton Tielen (email 15 Jul 2013) we were given new information. David Baruch Louzada became a member of Dotar in 1684. Dotar was one of quite a large number of charities set up by the Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam (there are dozens of them), but it was and is the most prestigious one. It was a lottery. the money was brought together by the members, invested wisely and the yearly profits were divided between two or three young ladies (donzellas) related to members of Dotar, or to poor orphan girls, to be used as a dowry. In 1714 David's place was taken by his eldest son: Ishac Baruch Louzada (filho mais velho).
In 1692 and in 1700 are the following entries into the lottery:
Ribca filha de Raphael Montezinos em Liorne terz[iero] grau com David Baruch Louzada
terz[iero] grau means that she was related to David in the third degree, which means she was his niece once removed. Thus David Baruch Louzada had family in Livorno by the name of raphael Montezinos and his daughter Ribca.
All of his infomation comes from CAA, PJC 1144, Escamoth D of Dotar.
Jacob Levie Gomes was presumably her brother - he was an uncle who witnessed the 1709 Amsterdam marriage of Salomon B Louzada with Sara Baruch Lousada of London
suggested birthdate in Fenneke's Surinam genealogy
first Lousada of Surinam by 1671, father of the older David, and emissary to Coro around 1720, died 1724
birth date unknown but must have been mature on arrival and journey was probably interrupted because of the disturbances surrounding early history of Surinam.
it is uncertain that he is correctly placed in this marriage because in 1750 Antonio aka Daniel would have been about 70. However, perhaps Moses is ruled out as a son of David and Isaac given there already was Moses #46 in the family of Isaac. But it is conceivable that after Moses #64 went to Amsterdam in 1649, he was replaced in Livorno by Isaac and Luna. Isaac was not the father of Moses #46 but Luna was.
Alternatively, Moses #1585 was a grandson of Daniel.
The description of Luna's relation to Abraham and David Pereira may differ from Jacob Israel Pereira's description of her brother Abraham as 'cousin germain' of Abraham Israel Pereira, in which case there is some work to do to find an expalantion for this difference.

On the 6th January, 1680, Abraham Valverde was not able to parade with the militia, but "Jacob Franckoe" turned out and figures with four other Jews in Lt.-Col. Codrington's Parade State.
JACOB FRANCO NUNES was then a young man of thirty-four [Born 1680-34=1646], with a household of four and only one negro slave. In later years his family comprised three sons, Isaac, Abraham and Moses, besides the two daughters (Simcha and Rachel) who had married the Valverde brothers. The family tended to drop the name "Nunes" and to be known simply as "Franco." When old Jacob Franco Nunes died at Bridgetown in 1726 he was extremely wealthy. Apart from negroes, chattels and real estate he left over £14,000 in the Funds to be paid out in cash legacies to some thirteen beneficiaries, including, incidentally, £20 for the "use of the Synagogue in the Towne of St. Michaelis."
He had then already been a widower for twenty years, and his second son, Abraham Franco Nunes, was in charge of his counting-house in London. His Barbados executor was his third son, Moses Franco, who, true to the family tradition, had married Rachel, a daughter of Abraham Valverde, but she died in childbirth at the age of sixteen.

Together with Antonio Machado, Jacob Pereira was the manager of Stadholder William III and he had amassed considerable wealth as a merchant. As food masters, Pereira and Machado were among other things responsible for the provision of bread, horses and wagons for the benefit of the Dutch troops during the Nine Years' War (1688-1697). Thanks to an agreement they had concluded with the Council of State, the principal advisory body of the stadholder, the bread they supplied was free of excise duties. Jacob Pereira founded in 1692 in the building next to his residence a prayer and community room called Beth Jahacob (House of Jacob), the first synagogue in The Hague. In 1707 he even got permission to demolish the old building and build a new synagogue.

Jacob #380's story follows: b1681; married Leah young; she died in 1702; in Bridgetown at time of mother's will/death; went to Jamaica soon after his mother's death and then married Abigail Lamego the elder and sired 5 children before dying young on 20 Jun 1722.
we know nothing of Leah - but perhaps she was an older sister of Abigail
Rachel would be the eldest daughter named after both grandmothers
Abigail is known to have been born about 1712 based on her age at death. This would place Rachel born about 1711.
This places Rebecca as being born after 1712
Jacob could have been the second child after Aaron meaning he was born aft 1706
The 3 Alvin cousins of Aaron #1174 suggest she married an Alvin.

Perhaps this Jacob, son of David #44, is the James endenized 1687 (see Bockstruck) and settled Barbados. This seems likely - ie he went from Barbados to London after the death of his 2 young sons and returned after endenization. If so, then he is not from David's 2nd or 3rd marriages. Thus he must have been born in Barbados and was quite young when he witnessed the will of Aaron Navarro. He was not the first-born son who would have been named after David's father Isaac.
a Jacob died 1712 in Barbados but on http://cdm.reed.edu/cdm4/jewishatlanticworld/ the date is shown as 1711. This source also shows a Rachel d1710 wife of Jacob at Bridgetown - maybe a second wife.

Father-in-law to Jacob Baruh Lousada
Isaac Lamego is often said to have married a Rachel Lousada, but not the sister of Jacob Baruh Lousada nor his daughter (as the Benjamin Barrow Lousada tree shows!). The former possibility seems impossible, as the sister was an unmarried widow of Rodrigues Lopes in Jamaica at the time of Jacob's death whilst Isaac Lamego was still alive and in London.
Death from BMR6 aged 57 gives implied birthdate of 1710 which may be wrong as his daughter Abigail was born in 1723! Edgar Samuel by email 16 Oct 2013 informs us that Albert Hyamson's 'Dictionary of Anglo-Jewish Biography' in of Anglo-Jewish Notabilities gives on p38 birth year 1685 ie age at death 82. We observe that it requies 2 transcription errors to get from 82 to 57 - both of which are plausible! Subsequently on 22 Oct 2013 Edgar Samuel found from inspection of an image in Bevis Marks Archives of the grave before the relocation to Brentwood that indeed there had been at least one transcription error - the first ie age at death was 80 plus and thus we take 82 as the correct date as per Hyamson.

these 3 children are beneficiaries of mother Abigail's brother (uncle) Jacob Baruh Lousada in his will written 23 Feb 1748 and are noted to be under 21 at that time. They are also mentioned in the order above, so are presumed to be born in that order

They had the following children.
Emanuel Aguilar-1278 was born in 1746. He died in 1785.
Isaac Aguilar-168 was born in 1748. He died in 1825.[Notes]

Daniel and Emanuel are referred to in the 1788 will of Sarah #384 together as if they were brothers. Jeremiah is also referred to immediately preceding them. David is referred to together with his children (not named). Aaron is also referred to but with no reference to children
As the three were brothers we concluded that only Jeremiah and David had children surviving to the time of Sarah's will of 1788. Leah #385 in her 1760 will makes it clear that the three brothers were sons of Solomon and that David had a daughter Rebecca. Rachel was also a child of David (see will of Isaac Lindo on www.barrow-lousada.org).
From this is seems clear that Daniel and Emanuel were sons of Jeremiah. Emanuel and (we suppose) Daniel both married Rachel. We associate only one child Esther with Daniel and his wife. Rachel would have been 16 when she married Daniel - a deduction we make based on Esther's known birthyear of 1767 and Rachel's known birthyear of 1750
she left the residue of her estate derived from the fortune of her husband to Amelia Baruh #1558 a step-daughter - see p215 ref 131 www.barrow-lousada.org which suggests she was childless (we think she lost her probable only daughter Esther in the hurricane of 1780 with her brother and Esher's uncle Ephraim)
we suggest her first husband was Daniel, the brother of her second husband

"The LOPES family had originated in Cuba, but moved to Jamacia [sic - lp] where a knighthood was bestowed for services to the Crown. [? Is this the Baronetcy created in 1805, or an earlier honour? - pl] Sir Mannaseh Masseh LOPES was born in Jamaica in 1755. His father - Mordecai Rodriguez LOPES was a wealthy sugar plantation owner who had come to England and settled in Clapham. Mannaseh was an only son and after inheriting his father's large fortune, came to Devon in 1798, when the Heywood Estates were in the market. This, of course, included the lovely sited house of Maristow, which he made his principal seat."
Granted arms 6th February, 1782 (College of Arms)
Alias: Mordet Lopes Of Surrey
Alias: Mordecai Henriques Lopez
Both he(Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopez) and his father, Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez, became converts to Christianity in 1802 [Jewish Encyclopedia.com]
Towards the end of the 18th century his attendance and that of his son at the house of prayer, slackened; rumours as to his orthodoxy arose, and a letter to the following effect, dated 11th July 1802, did not cause much surprise to the Mahamad, to whom it was addressed: " " A recent circumstance in regard to my future situation, which will very soon appear, makes it incompatible to my remaining any longer a yahid or member of the congregation, and I have desired my friend, Mr Moses Lindo, junr., to apprise you of my intention and to pay my account with the Synagogue." In concluding his communication, Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez, like Moses Ximenes, expressed the best wishes for the welfare of his late brethren, and, moreover, he stated that he had instructed Moses Lindo, junr., to present the Synagogue with "150 fur the zedaka or charity fund. The " recent circumstance " adverted to by Lopez, was evidently his conversion and that of his son to the recognised religion of the State. The change in the theological opinions of Mordecai and of Menasseh Lopez happened by a singular coincidence to manifest itself at the time of a general election, and the fact was immediately followed by the return of Menasseh as member for New Romney. Menasseh Lopez was created a baronet in 1805, with remainder to his nephew, Ralph Franco
Burial Domingo 26 AD 5556: 6 Mar 1796
In the Dictionary of National Biography is an entry which says, "Lopes, Sir Manasseh Masseh 1755-1831 [Mordecai's son], politician, a descendant of a family of Spanish Jews, and only son of Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes of Clapham, Surrey, by his wife Rebecca, daughter of Manasseh Pereira of Jamaica."
In "A Record of the Jews in Jamaica," Jacob Andrade wrote concerning Mordecai's son, "Sir Manasseh Masseh Lopez (1st Bart.) - English politician; born in Jamaica on January 22, 1755. Descended from ancient Sephardic stock. One of Jamaica's opulent families. In 1802 he was returned to Parliament for New Romney (having along with his father Mordecai Henriques Lopez embraced Christianity in that year)." [p. 148] With regard to the middle name of "Henriques," Mr. Andrade's book was sloppily edited and is in error.
Polly Lawrence quoted a note she had found concerning the Lopes family, "The Lopes family had originated in Cuba, but moved to Jamaica where a knighthood was bestowed for services to the Crown. Sir Mannaseh Masseh Lopes was born in Jamaica in 1755. His father - Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes - was a wealthy sugar plantation owner who had come to England and settled in Clapham. Mannaseh [sic] was an only son and after inheriting his father's large fortune, came to Devon in 1798."
In his will Mordecai Rodriguez Lopes stated that he lived at Percy Street, St. Pancras, Middlesex and that he also had a house at Clapham in the parish of Streathem, Surrey. He stated that he wished to be buried with Jewish rites, and he left money to the Synagogue and Poor Jews in Kingston, Jamaica, and to the Portuguese Synagogue in London. His will mentions his wife Rebecca; his sister Abigail Pereira, widow; Mr. Joshua Pereira of Jamaica; his son Manasseh Lopes; daughter Rachel Pereira, widow; grandchildren Raphael, Lydia, Rebecca, Abigail, and Esther Franco (infant children of my late daughter Esther Franco deceased by her husband Abraham Franco, Esq.); grandsons Mordecai and Manaseh Pereira; my other grandchildren Sarah, Rebecca, Abigail, Leah Esther, and Isaac Pereira (children of my said daughter Rachel Pereira).
In his christening record of 20 Jun 1802 in the IGI Manasseh Lopes gave his father's name as "Mordet."
Percy Street is off Tottenham Court Road. (Peter Thomas Pereira Letter 23 Apr 2004 to Alan Pereira)
Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez was descended from an ancient Sephardi stock, whose name we have met already, who flourished in the world of finance, and who realised fortunes in foreign trade. Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez dwelt in Clapham, and had wedded Rebecca, daughter of Menasseh Pereira of Jamaica, by whom he had a son, Menasseh Lopez, who was born in that island in 1755. The elder Lopez, after a residence in the West Indies, returned to England an opulent man. He conformed outwardly to the rites of Judaism for many years, and served the usual Synagogue offices. Towards the end of the 18th century his attendance and that of his son at the house of prayer, slackened ; rumours as to his orthodoxy arose, and a letter to the following effect, dated llth July 1802, did not cause much surprise to the Mahamad, to whom it was addressed : " A recent circumstance in regard to my future situation, which will very soon appear, makes it incompatible to my remaining any longer a yahid or member of the congregation, and I have desired my friend, Mr Moses Lindo, junr., to apprise you of my intention and to pay my account with the Synagogue." In concluding his communication, Mordecai Rodriguez Lopez, like Moses Ximenes, expressed the best wishes for the welfare of his late brethren, and, moreover, he stated that he had instructed Moses Lindo, junr., to present the Synagogue with 150 for the zedaka or charity fund. The " recent circumstance " adverted to by Lopez was evidently his conversion and that of his son to the recognised religion of the State. The change in the theological opinions of Mordecai and of Menasseh Lopez happened by a singular coincidence to manifest itself at the time of a general election, and the fact was immediately followed by the return of Menasseh as member for New Romney. Menasseh Lopez was created a baronet in 1805, with remainder to his nephew, Ralph Franco. In the next election, Sir Menasseh secured a seat 'for Barpstaple, for which borough he was again re-elected in 1818. Curious to say, we find that an attorney, named Dance, who had insulted Sir Menasseh Lopez, incorrectly described as " a Jew baronet," was condemned to twelve months imprisonment, and to be struck off the rolls. On the 18th March 1819, the "Jew baronet" was found guilty at the Exeter Assize of having bribed the electors of the borough of Grampound to secure his election, and sentence was deferred. On the 13th November he was again prosecuted for a similar offence, and convicted, and he received sentence in the Court of Queen's Bench. He was condemned for the first offence to be imprisoned for twenty-one months in Exeter Jail, and to pay to the King a fine of 10,000, and for the second infraction of the law, which had been committed in Devonshire, he was sentenced to a further confinement of three months and another fine of 2000. Notwithstanding these untoward circumstances, Sir Menasseh Massey Lopez was once more returned to Parliament, and this time he was chosen as a fit representative for the immaculate borough of Westbury. In 1826 he resigned to make room for Sir Robert Peel, who had been ejected from the Protestant University of Oxford, on account of his public conduct on the question of Catholic emancipation. Sir Men- asseh married the daughter of Mr John Yeates of Monmouth, and his only child, Esther, died in 1819, when twenty-four years old. Sir Menasseh Massey Lopez, Bart., died at an advanced age in 1831, at Maristow House. He was then fulfilling the functions of Recorder of Westbury, in addition to being a magistrate for two counties. He was succeeded by his nephew, Ralph Franco, who hecarne Sir Ralph Lopes, Bart., the last letter in the name being softened into S. The landed and personal property bequeathed by the first baronet was estimated at upwards of 800,000. Sir Massey Lopes, one of the present Lords of the Admiralty, is the son of Sir Ralph Lopes, Bart., otherwise Ralph Franco. It is worthy of remark that Sir Massey Lopes, the son of a Jew, holds a place in the present Conservative administration, which is headed by the son of another Jew, himself born within the pale of Judaism.

The marriage does not seem to have been easy, at least as judged by the childrens' birthdates. The firstborn - Abigail did not arrive until nearly 4 years after the marriage. The first son Aaron who died young did not arrive until 12 years of marriage. Esther was probably born around 1746 (between her brothers Emanuel born 1744 and Isaac born 1748) so was about 17 when she married.
The 2nd Aaron - probably a mulatto - see discussion of the wills of Emanuel and Grace Lopes Torres in key documents - arrived before Isaac the last son so if there had been an estrangement - perhaps only due to Esther returning to England for a period - they were soon reconciled with Grace Lopes Torres adopting the 2nd Aaron.
One wonders how much time Esther spent in Jamaica - though Emanuel in his will thanks female relatives for assisting sons Daniel and Jacob when they were in England this may be because Esther was not capable even though she herself may have been in England. She was born, married and died in England - but as noted must have returned to Jamaica for a period for the conception and birth of Isaac.

Daniel's 3 daughters were born between 30 Oct 1765 (his first marriage) and 27 Nov 1768 (death of first wife). The order must have been Rachel (after paternal grandmother), Abigail (after maternal grandmother) and then Rebecca so that gives approximate birthdates 1766, 1767 and 1768!
