December, l943, microfilmed at Public Library, Halkett Place, StH Elie Marie Joseph died of Cerebral embolus provoked by the fracture of right tibia and fibula on the morning of his 68th birthday on Saturday, l8th December, l943 at General Hospital, Gloucester Road, St. Helier (during the German occupation of Jersey) from an accident on Tuesday, llth October in felling a tree, which fell the wrong way, at La Charrière, Augerez, St.Peter, the property of Mr. Ren‚ Francois Turme, his neighbour. Augerez is a district within St.Peter's Parish. My mother explained that instead of digging a hole underneath they pulled him from beneath the tree. The accident was reported in "The (Jersey) Evening Post" on l2th October, l8th, 20th and 2lst December; 20th giving the adjournment of the inquest for a post- mortem examination that day and funeral details for Tuesday, 2lst at 9.45 from Bas des Routeurs or l0.30 at St.Mathew's R.C. Church and 2lst his inquest verdict of 20th. After the accident ElieMJ "was first taken to his home at Mont des Routeurs, St.Peter's Valley and during the evening, as he appeared to be more seriously injured than was at first thought, he was removed to hospital." l8th December article reported his removal to the General Hospital after the accident "having apparently suffered a stroke at the same time. He was reported at first to be progressing favourably but later got worse and passed away to-day. The death was reported to the police and an inquest is probable." 2lst December article reported that "The inquest was concluded to-day (20.l2.) at the Royal Court offices when Dr. A.S. Darling presented the report of the post-mortem examination which showed that death was due to cerebral haemorrhage. In support of this Mr. A.C. Halliwell explained that the post-mortem showed cerebral haemorrhage was not of the ordinary type but was attributable to the accident. Raimbault's death was due directly to the accident and not the disease." The War ended on 8th May, l945 in England but the Germans remained in the Channel Islands for about two more years in order to clear mines. From "Raimbault/Basset History"
