This is because both the above Emma & a John Munk are living in Ratcliff in 1881 and John is living with a Cole family, the head of which is probably Emma's brother. The 1861 Census above proves this as John Munk is living with Henry Cole, who is brother to Emma and son of Mary Ann Cole (widowed wife of James).

She is shown to be aged 27, unmarried and born in Teddington, Middlesex. Stanley Norman Monk thought his father's birthday was 16th June because that is Joyce, his wife's birthday also. John James Monk's Birth Certificate gives 3rd July. A possible reason for the discrepancy is that John's parents were too late in registering his birth such that the Registrar registered his birth as 3rd July instead of 16th June. Given his Birth Certificate birth date of 3rd July, he was not registered until 17th August, 1886. This late registration happened for Beatrice Harriet Clark, John's future wife. This was the only John James Monk born January 1885-December 1887 and his age on marriage and death both correspond to his having been born in 1886.
A possible confirmation or coincidence is that a witness to the wedding of John James & Beatrice Harriet was "M. Cole". A further discrepancy is that on their Marriage Certificate John James Monk gives his father's name as John James Monk and he must have been living as no "deceased" appears.

She married her first husband in Custom House, Newham over the River (Thames) from where she was born in Bermondsey. Her father was born in Bermondsey and her parents married south of the River at St.Saviour, Southwark.

The Monk family moved from Poplar to Dagenham in l928-?l933 to 4 Armstead Walk then to Dagenham Avenue. They ran a Greengrocery at Rush Green Road shops for 3/4 years, John purchasing fruit&vegetables from Covent Garden and Beatrice selling the produce (this skill in selling perishable produce quickly must have passed to their daughter, Beatrice Ann as she was Manageress of the Co-operatve Society (later C.R.S.), Derwent Parade, South Ockendon in l970s and she quadrupled their weekly sales). They moved to Marston Avenue near Oxlow Lane for six months then to Rainham to Mount Beulah by September l939 returning to Dagenham to 200 Reede Road ?1940-?1960. After John James' death Beatrice Harriet moved to South Ockendon.

Robert being the oldest brother "looked after" me from the 5-11 age period, after which time his interest lay with looking after girls. He didn't lack for attention in that direction although he was somewhat shy (I believed he cultivated that appearance in order to get the girls to make the first move).
A normally boisterous boy who became a responsible adult, husband and father.
It is unfortunate that Robert suffered the illness of Multiple Sclerosis at a very early period in his life. I first noticed the onset about 1974 when working with him in stripping down an engine on his car (he was a welder and self taught mechanic & I was an Engineer - so we knew what we were doing).
He would go out of his way to help people, probably a fault in his family's eyes as it meant leaving them at sometimes inconvenient time.
He had a droll scense of humour and is sadly missed!
